The Romanian Science Festival is an initiative that aims to bring science closer to students through mentoring and through informal, hands‑on interaction with science.

CONTEXT

In Romania, science subjects are usually taught in an abstract and conceptual manner, with minimal emphasis on practical applications or real‑world contexts.

The Romanian Science Festival (RSF) aims to promote a passion for STEM fields among young people in Romania. Through festivals, mentoring programs, and online activities, RSF seeks to spark curiosity and enthusiasm for science.

STRATEGY

The program connects students with role models from among Romanian students, researchers, and professionals in the international academic diaspora, who serve as mentors. These mentors interact with students and schools, sharing knowledge and inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Through festivals, mentoring, and online activities, the program aims to:

  • Increase children’s and young people’s interest in science
  • Promote inclusion and accessibility by running activities in rural and small urban communities
  • Increase awareness of educational and career opportunities in STEM
  • Boost confidence and enthusiasm for scientific research and experimentation
  • Reduce scientific illiteracy
  • Strengthen the capacity of schools, teachers, and educational institutions to offer engaging and effective STEM education

EXPECTED RESULTS

  • 50,000 children participating in the Romanian Science Festival
  • 8 festival editions
  • 1,600 youth volunteers
  • 240 coordinating teachers
  • 180 mentors from the diaspora
