The program aims to\u00a0increase\u00a0students\u2019 competencies and interest for real-world Math\u00a0by improving Math\u00a0teaching and assessment practices.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

CONTEXT<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

DataMathLab continues the 2021 pilot project (DataSciLab), originally designed to improve math skills (especially statistics) among middle\u2011school students.
\nAfter two years, the program set more ambitious goals: using mathematics to solve real\u2011world problems that require reasoning and understanding beyond memorization.<\/p>\n

DataMathLab is an initiative aimed at improving mathematical literacy among middle\u2011school students and increasing the interest of more students\u2014including from rural areas\u2014in pursuing higher education in technical and scientific fields, while providing them with the academic knowledge and skills needed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

STRATEGY<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The project uses the Teaching for Robust Understanding (TRU) framework and proven effective practices for developing ready\u2011to\u2011use classroom lesson plans and training activities for middle\u2011school math teachers.<\/p>\n

Teaching is guided by five dimensions:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Content:<\/strong> real\u2011world problem contexts used to teach and reinforce students\u2019 knowledge<\/li>\n
  • Cognitive demand:<\/strong> problem\u2011solving and metacognitive strategies that help students evaluate their own thinking<\/li>\n
  • Equitable access to content:<\/strong> ways to cultivate high expectations for all students and counter common misconceptions (\u201conly some students are good at math\u201d)<\/li>\n
  • Agency, identity, and responsibility:<\/strong> collaborative work and communication of mathematical ideas both visually and verbally<\/li>\n
  • Formative assessment:<\/strong> methods for identifying and clarifying misunderstandings and making students\u2019 thinking visible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
