{"id":34772,"date":"2021-03-09T16:38:26","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T16:38:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rafonline.org\/?post_type=program&#038;p=34772"},"modified":"2026-03-17T13:04:00","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T13:04:00","slug":"food-hub-development","status":"publish","type":"program","link":"https:\/\/rafonline.org\/en\/program\/food-hub-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Hub Development (Finished)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"text-sus\">\n<p><strong>A group of Romanian NGOs developed and pilot Food Hubs as sustainable economic alternatives that can ensure fair market access to small local food producers and individual small farmers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>CONTEXT<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"context\">\n<p>Access to markets coupled with basic business know-how, and access to capital are critical elements necessary for the economic development of rural Romania.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After testing cooperatives as one viable market solution for small farmers, RAF partners active in rural development are taking on the challenge to test another model. Facilitation, NGO selection and assistance in this phase was provided by CIVITAS.<\/li>\n<li class=\"list-text\">Phase 2: implementation of business plans in five regions and start-up consolidation \u2013 a selection committee comprised professionals who volunteered their time and expertise selected five Food Hub locations, based on the market research and business plans submitted. RAF provided grants to the five selected organizations to implementthe proposed Food Hub models, providing small farmers with a valid local economic model.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"strategie\">\n<p>Five organizations worked with small and medium-sized farmers in the following regions to test the food hub model in the market:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/openfields.ro\/opening-of-the-nord.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Funda\u021bia Open Fields<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0in the Vatra Dornei area \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nordnatural.ro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Nord Natural\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Hub<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmsc.ro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Funda\u021bia Centrul de Mediere \u0219i Securitate Comunitar\u0103\u00a0<\/a>(CMSC),\u00a0\u00a0in the Ia\u0219i area \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/roadesimerinde\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Roade si Merinde\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Hub<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.civitas.ro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Funda\u021bia Civitas pentru Societatea Civil\u0103, Filiala Cluj Napoca<\/a>,\u00a0in the\u00a0Cluj area \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nodverde.ro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Nod Verde\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Hub<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.civitas.ro\/index.php\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Funda\u021bia Civitas pentru Societatea Civil\u0103, Filiala Odorheiu Secuiesc<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0in the\u00a0Odorheiu Secuiesc area \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/helyenvalo.ro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hely\u00e9nval\u00f3 Helyit!\u00a0<\/strong>Hub<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/worldvision.ro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Vision Romania<\/a>, in the Bra\u0219ov area and Ialomi\u021ba, V\u00e2lcea, Dolj, and Vaslui counties \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/merindar.ro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Merindar<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(2017-2020)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ffff.ro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friends for Friends Foundation<\/a> supported the Food Hubs in the implementation of marketing and sales strategies and in the public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7lJalqdaLqQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">communication<\/a> of the Food Hub <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7lJalqdaLqQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concept<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, CRPE prepared a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crpe.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/20211207_Food-Hubs-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first report<\/a> to show the potential of Food-Hubs as a sustainable distribution alternative for small and medium producers and farmers in Romania.<\/p>\n<p>Food Hubs are not just aggregators of local agri-food products, nor simple logistics warehouses, they bring a series of vital services to small and medium-sized farmers, which they cannot get anywhere else at the moment.
